DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - The reconstruction of the main runway at Duluth International Airport was originally expected to be completed by early November. However, the project has been delayed due to earlier than usual snow and cold weather and crews are continuing to work on finishing up some of the final items. The runway is now scheduled to reopen on Thursday, November 23, although some intermittent closures may still occur after that date. While the main runway is closed, the shorter, crosswind runway is used. Because of that, passengers are advised that some flight delays or cancellations may be necessary during certain weather conditions. Every effort is made to schedule the remaining construction work when it will be the least disruptive to normal operations. As always, the airport recommends checking on your flight status often

  • Heritage Sports Center Gets Major GiftsHeritage Sports Center Gets Major Gifts

DULUTH, MN (KDAL) - Two major financial donations have been given to the Duluth Heritage Sports Center Foundation recently.      The Herbert A. Fritch Family Foundation has awarded the Essentia Health Sports Center Foundation a gift of stock worth $1.6 million dollars.   Herbert Fritch was recently inducted into the Duluth East Hall of Fame and is part owner of the Nashville Predators in the NHL.    Prior to that an anonymous donor gave $1 million dollars and these two gifts combined will enable the Sports Center Foundation to assist with the construction debt on the facility, and the Foundation will now be the sole owner of the debt, according to the president/ceo Jerry DeMeo.   This change in mortgage holders doesn’t mean at the Center is “debt free”. There’s still the debt held by the Foundation that needs to be serviced. “It’s the Foundation’s plan to offer very favorable debt-service terms to the Center.” Francisco stated. “But we will be receiving some return in the form of interest payments so as to enable us to continue to provide assistance for youth from financially-challenged families to enable them to participate in sports and/or to further their education at the college level.”     According to the Center’s President/CEO, Jerry DeMeo, the terms arranged with the Foundation are quite favorable. “This is truly a great time for the Center and for our entire community.” DeMeo said. “The interest schedule from the Foundation will not unduly burden our budget. We’re able to meet this obligation while still preserving capital to meet our future planned facility and equipment needs”.     DeMeo also said that he and other members of the Center’s team are extremely grateful for this support. “We’re both honored and humbled by the trust shown in our ability to tend to the Center’s needs and to meet the expectations of our customers. To have so many caring, generous people like Herb and Barbara Fritch and the hundreds of others who came before them to turn the dreams of a great facility like the Center into reality is truly, truly amazing.”

  • Franken Says GOP Tax Plan Is Bad For MinnesotaFranken Says GOP Tax Plan Is Bad For Minnesota

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KDAL) - U-S Senator Al Franken says the proposed GOP tax plan is a handout to large corporations and the wealthy that does little to improve the lives of Minnesotans. Franken says the Senate plan also kicks more than 13 million Americans off health insurance by "gutting the Affordable Care Act" which he calls "unconscionable." Senator Franken's staff was in Duluth at Lake Superior College on Thursday to hear from Mayor Emily Larson and other local officials about how the tax plan would affect this region. On the KDAL morning show, Franken says the plan would also add 1.5 trillion dollars to the deficit that creates more pressure to cut investments in education, housing and infrastructure. Senate Democrats are against the plan and at least one GOP Senator, Ron Johnson from Wisconsin, will also vote against the measure in its current version.
