CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Tuesday was a history-making day in the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened above 26,000, but reversed by the afternoon and closed lower. The Dow gave up a 238-point gain, pulling back from record gains set earlier in the session. Raymond James’ financial adviser Mark Teed told 22News some uncertainty based in the nation’s capitol chilled the market. But he doesn’t think Tuesday’s record reversal is the start of a new negative direction. Dow Jones industrials climb above 25,000 for the first time “I think the market’s got a lot of enthusiasm,” said Teed. “There’s a lot of people still on the sidelines that missed out on this market so there’s a lot to go. Earnings have been outstanding. the tax cut hasn’t really still been priced in fully. So it’s not yet where there’ll be a downward trend, no.” Teed told 22News he doesn’t foresee an inevitable healthy market correction until some time next year. But he also anticipates some choppy trading between now and then.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts is anticipating more snow Tuesday night and Wednesday. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect, and the timing will make for a tough commute Wednesday morning. Winter Storm Warning: Tuesday evening-Wednesday afternoon The 22News Storm Team’s predicting most western Massachusetts cities and towns will be covered by several inches of snow by Wednesday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. MassDOT is warning drivers to be prepared to face “difficult travel conditions” Wednesday morning. One driver told 22News he’s worried what the snow might keep you from seeing on the road surface. “There’s a lot of potholes,” said Rita Breglio of Westfield. “You really gotta be careful before you pop a tire. I think the difference in the temperature, the cold, and then the warm up, and then the cold again, that’s what’s doing it. Cause we’re due to have some more cold weather I understand.” MassDOT said they were already pre-treating roads with brine and magnesium chloride. The transportation department’s reminding drivers not to crowd the plow, and to give yourself more time to get to your destinations. Many cities and towns have already canceled school and instituted parking bans. Parking bans in effect in western Massachusetts ahead of snowstorm

  • Holyoke’s two high schools to merge next fallHolyoke’s two high schools to merge next fall

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke’s two high schools will become one next fall. “One city, one high school!” That’s the new mantra for the merging of Holyoke High School and Dean Technical High School into Holyoke High School North and South. The merger means access to technical training, and participation in Holyoke’s new theme-based academies, which focus on fields including medicine, technology, and media. “I’m not for it,” Gerald Hortie, a Dean Tech alum, said he wasn’t sure about the merger. “When I went to school, and I think a lot of kids are in the same situation, they’re really not going for the academics, they’re going for the trades. I guess they have to pledge which way they want to go very soon here.” Holyoke’s academy-based programs start this fall for current eighth and ninth graders. Current ninth graders will select one of the four academies the first week of February, and current eighth graders the first week of March. Holyoke is hoping to address what the school system referred to as a “chronically low graduation rate” and “struggling academic performance.” Holyoke’s new high school model will include work-based learning opportunities like job shadowing and internships. “Merging campuses to expand opportunities for all kids, but also to start thinking about how can we more explicitly, intentionally and successfully link the learning that’s happening in the classrooms with the learning that’s happening out in the adult world,” Executive Principal Dr. Stephen Mahoney of Holyoke North & South told 22News. Students will be able to tour the campus and learn about the academies before deciding on their educational path. Two public informational sessions for parents and other interested community members will be held on November 28 at 6 p.m. at the Holyoke High School and on November 30 at 6 p.m. at the E.N. White School. Click here for more information >>>> You can also send your questions and comments here >>>>

  • Heating oil companies finally catching up with demand after cold snapHeating oil companies finally catching up with demand after cold snap

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Heating oil companies are catching up with the high customer demand created by this month’s cold snap. Noonan Energy in Springfield told 22News delivery drivers typically make 30 stops a day, but in early January, frigid temperatures had their drivers making 40 to 50 stops a day. Sudden low temperatures increasing demand for home heating oil The company said snow does slow drivers down, and can limit their number of stops. You don’t want to run out of oil. Noonan Energy recommends you order oil before your tank drops below a quarter full. “Drivers were delivering on New Years day, and Saturday and Sunday before new years,” Noonan Energy Director of Sales and Marketing Tim Noonan told 22News. “I can’t remember when that ever happened before, not in my memory anyway.” Heating your home this winter Noonan said demand for heating oil is higher because it’s been such a cold winter, and prices are about .50 cents higher than they were this time last year.

  • Southampton votes to put legal marijuana sales in town on holdSouthampton votes to put legal marijuana sales in town on hold

SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Southampton held a special town meeting Tuesday night to decide on a temporary moratorium on selling recreational marijuana. The town approved a temporary moratorium on opening any establishments that sell recreational marijuana. Even though Massachusetts legalized recreational marijuana more than a year ago, there’s uncertainty in Southampton as to when pot sales will be legal. Southampton voted to ammend the town’s zoning bylaw to impose a temporary moritorium on Recreational pot-shops in town. The measure passed by the required two-thirds majority. During moratorium, Southampton addressed the potential impacts of recreational marijuana on the town. The moratorium will be in place until the end of the year, but could be ended sooner. A moratorium in the town of Southampton would not completely ban recreational marijuana use, but would instead put a temporary hold on legal pot sales. New marijuana laws could lead retailers to accepting cash only payments Town’s planning board and board of health asked for the moratorium to give them time to review possible zoning or law changes. “This is just something to give the planning board some time to get some legal advice to do that and it is not by any means a permanent moratorium or ban on recreational establishments,” Town Administrator Edward Gibson told 22News. Gibson told 22News moratorium opponents fear the delay would cause potential pot shop owners to open their businesses elsewhere. New England Hydroponics Assistant Manager Arlo Butler believes the moratorium will benefit the town and shops. “They’re going to be able to step back, vet the organizations coming in and make sure that the money goes in the right direction for the town and that everybody prospers from the mutual agreements,” Butler said. Vermont’s governor is set to sign a bill to legalize recreational marijuana

  • DPW crews filling potholes with cold patch, a temporary fixDPW crews filling potholes with cold patch, a temporary fix

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Like many drivers here in western Massachusetts, you’ve probably found yourself trying to avoid massive potholes up and down roads. DPW crew filling potholes have been working to fill these holes, but the cold patch material they have been using is only quick fix  and a temporary solution. Constant freezing and thawing has led to more and more of these massive holes surfacing and permanent repairs can’t be made until spring time. Recent changes in weather resulting in more potholes Director of the Department of Public Works in Springfield, Chris Cignoli told 22News that the ground is just too cold right now to fill these holes permanently. “The adherence that you’re going to get in the pothole really doesn’t work this time of the year,” said Cignoli. “You’re really kinda just getting yourself through the winter and then in the spring everybody goes back and usually hits those ones with the hot mix material.” Some drivers are hoping that this swing in weather conditions subsides soon so potholes can be fixed before the spring. Grant Cooper told 22News that he’s gotten two flat tire as a result of hitting potholes this season. “There’s nothing we can do right now but just try to avoid them,” said Cooper. “Hopefully they won’t mess our cars up too much.” If you have potholes in your neighborhood, contact your local DPW to have temporary cold patches laid down. Cignoli told 22News that crews can only patch up these holes if they are notified. Spring arrived but potholes are still a problem in western Massachusetts

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Just before it got dark last Sunday night, Anne Fox let her three Pomeranians out into the fenced-in pool area of her backyard on Rachael Terrace in Westfield. A coyote approached from the woods and snatched one of her dogs, Trixie, pulling her through the fence and dragging her into a ravine. Anne Fox said it happened so fast. She and her family went looking for Trixie and eventually discovered her remains. The family is having her cremated. A neighbor told 22News she’s shaken up. “I’ve got a small Bichon,” Jillian Knapp said. “To imagine her walk outside to go pee and watching her get mauled by a coyote is frightening to think about. “It’s been a shock for the whole neighborhood. I am more concerned about kids. We have a lot of little kids in our neighborhood.” Knapp told 22News she’s heard coyotes howling in the neighborhood before, but she’s never seen one. She says they have seen bobcats and bears. It’s a good idea to keep all dog food inside and only go outside with your pets when they’re on a leash.

  • Vermont’s governor is set to sign a bill to legalize recreational marijuanaVermont’s governor is set to sign a bill to legalize recreational marijuana

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)-Vermont is set to become the first state to approve legal recreational marijuana through its legislature, instead of a citizen referendum. Vermont’s House last week passed a nearly identical bill to Senate legislation to make it legal for adults 21 and over to possess one ounce of marijuana and grow a small number of pot plants. Vermont’s governor has signaled he’ll sign the bill into law. “New Hampshire is more of a free state I think they might pass it and get it regulated faster, said Russell Kirk of Greenfield. “Then that will hurt Massachusetts.” Vermont is just a short drive up I-91 for Franklin county residents. Greenfield’s Mayor said it could take business away from Franklin County if pot shops were allowed there. “The legislation in Vermont I frankly see it as the same as a no tax in New Hampshire so maybe you’ll be having skirting the boundaries to purchase for savings,” said Greenfield Mayor Bill Martin. Mayor Martin told 22News the city will comply with the state’s regulations on marijuana. Greenfield’s moratorium on recreational marijuana sales is set to expire on June 30th. Mayor Martin said the City Council would revisit their moratorium once the Cannabis Commission finalizes the state’s regulations.
