  • Future Of Civic Center Still In The AirFuture Of Civic Center Still In The Air

City council members are trying to figure out how to best use the civic center and get the most out of it. Aside from Mardi Gras, one constant is the International Festival which was held today. “It’s really cute, I see kids jumping around up there and having fun,” says Vanessa Vilchez. Dancing, history and food. “Right now I’m eating some teriyaki chicken and fried rice from Thailand.,” says Vilchez. “It’s been really fun but also informative, there have been so many things I’ve never seen before, or eaten before,” says Kia Uribe. The International Festival has been held here at the civic center since 1983. “We think it’s wonderful, this is the second year we’ve been and we’ll come back every year,” says Christine Knowles. The facility is 50 years old and repairs to bring it up to code have not been done. In order to do that, and keep it open and operating for several years down the road, the city will need to spend over $30 million. “I’m in one of the mystic organizations that has their ball here every year so it’s got to serve that group, it’s got to serve things like this and get a little bit more diverse and other things that you don’t see here,” says David Knowles. The site is 24 acres and some council members have expressed a desire for part of the land to become residential. But for today, these folks say they’re enjoying the fact the civic center is still standing. Early on, Mayor Sandy Stimpson said the civic center might need to be torn down. There was immediate backlash. The city now intends to develop an RFP (Request For Proposals) to address high level needs including civic, residential, retail, recreation, arts and Mardi Gras. That RFP will be sent to global development groups who might be interested in developing the site.

ATLANTA (AP) – The family of a 5-year-old boy killed when he became caught in a rotating Atlanta restaurant is suing the company, saying it failed to prevent a “longstanding safety hazard.” The lawsuit comes after Charlie Holt died in the Sun Dial, a restaurant atop the 73-story Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the child and his parents were visiting Atlanta from Charlotte, North Carolina, when he became caught between a wall and table as the dining room rotated April 14. The lawsuit says the restaurant had no protections to stop children from getting close to a dangerous area, or to stop the floor’s rotation if a child became trapped. Jeff Flaherty, a spokesman for parent firm Marriott International Inc., told the newspaper the company had no comment. (Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. • Bring on the Tide: No. 6 Auburn runs past ULM 42-14Bring on the Tide: No. 6 Auburn runs past ULM 42-14

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) – Darius Slayton’s 50-yard scoring catch late in the first half gave No. 6 Auburn the lead and the Tigers pulled away for a 42-14 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday to set up next week’s visit from No. 1 Alabama. Kam Martin scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving, in the third quarter. Nick Ruffin scored on a 45-yard interception return in the fourth. Despite a sluggish first half, Auburn’s final production was still impressive: 317 yards rushing and 552 total yards. Auburn (9-2, No. 6 CFP) can earn a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game by beating Alabama next week. The Tigers, perhaps distracted by last week’s rout of then-No. 2 Georgia and next week’s Iron Bowl showdown with Alabama, were tied at 7 with ULM (4-6) late in the first half. Auburn took the lead on Slayton’s bomb from Jarrett Stidham with 1:27 remaining in the half. Auburn pulled away in the third quarter. Stidham added a 41-yard touchdown pass to Martin, who also scored on a 1-yard run. Cornerback Javaris Davis had an interception and a forced fumble in a span of about two minutes late in the third quarter to help Auburn take control. Kerryon Johnson, the SEC’s leading rusher, ran for 137 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He had six carries for 37 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown run, on Auburn’s opening drive. The Warhawks had a strong answer – a 13-play touchdown drive helped by a third-down pass interference call against cornerback Jamel Dean. The penalty gave ULM a first down at the Auburn 2. Wide receiver Brian Williams scored on an end-around run on fourth down. The 7-7 tie held until late in the half when Auburn suddenly rediscovered its offense. The Tigers needed only four plays to cover 96 yards on the drive capped by Stidham’s long touchdown pass to Slayton. Williams scored on a 70-yard pass from Garrett Smith with less than 6 minutes remaining. Malik Miller had a 1-yard touchdown run for Auburn. THE TAKEAWAY ULM: The Warhawks frustrated Auburn most of the first half but struggled to move the ball after their impressive opening drive. Caleb Evans completed only 9 of 25 passes for 86 yards and had 10 carries for 34 yards before ULM turned to Smith, the backup, in the second half. ULM said Evans was not injured. Auburn: With an eye on next week’s visit from Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Tigers’ defense should benefit from the challenge posed by ULM dual-threat quarterback Evans. Coach Gus Malzahn should be encouraged by his team outscoring the Warhawks 35-7 after the 7-7 tie. Willis had a 62-yard run after taking over for Stidham late in the game. Martin had 12 carries for 83 yards. UP NEXT ULM: Hosts Arkansas State on Saturday. Auburn: Hosts No. 1 Alabama on Saturday to determine SEC Western Division champion. ___ More AP college football: http://www.collegefootball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_Top25 (Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. Irvington, AL (WKRG) It’s a hobby that can turn into a lifelong passion. Members of the Azalea City Model Aeronautics Club came to Irvington Field to take flight and also take part. They were taking part in WKRG’s Magical Christmas Toy Drive. The entry fee or flight fee was the donation of one unwrapped toy to our drive. Dozens of people were at the field.  This is something they have been doing for the last several years. This year the weather was really cooperating. One year ago it was bitterly cold. This year is nice and warm. It’s perfect weather to help with the turnout too. People were donating toys and taking off on the runway. Organizers say it’s a good cause and a good time. “It’s the feel-good event of the year for us. We know we can take in toys and in some cases, we know these may be the only toys some of these kids get,” said Club President Aaron Carpenter.  “It’s just something we do to give back to the community. The nicer it is the more people come out, especially the spectators and people who just came to watch, we get more toys and toys we can give back. This is the first Toy Drive event and it officially gets underway at noon on Monday.  Organizers said they originally planned to have the fly-in next weekend–but had to move it one week early when they realized it would have fallen on the same day as the Iron Bowl.

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) – Two students at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut have been charged with setting fires in a dormitory. Hamden police say Bernhard Wright, of Oslo, Norway, and Carmelo Fazzolari, of Manalapan, New Jersey, were charged with arson and other offenses in the early Friday fires. Police allege the men set the fires in The Commons dormitory, which houses nearly 500 students. Several students witnessed the fires and reported them. Investigators determined the fires were intentionally set in two trash cans and several bathroom stalls. Authorities say a student was burned while trying to move a burning trash can. The school says the students have been suspended pending a “conduct meeting.” Wright and Fazzolari are free on $1,000 bail. It’s unclear whether either defendant has an attorney who can comment. • COLD CASE: Who Killed Woman Near Ladd StadiumCOLD CASE: Who Killed Woman Near Ladd Stadium

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG0 — Every year, Bernadine Corbin’s children and friends hold a candlelight vigil on her birthday near where she lived, and died, on Virginia Street near Ladd-Peebles Stadium. She’s been gone for 16 years. “We don’t have any answers,” said her daughter Shanna Corbin. “Nothing at all,” added her sister Jenesis Corbin. “And you’re wishing and hoping that someone would tell us just anything, something.” One night in February 2001, 35-year-old Bernadine Corbin told her kids – ages 15, 9, and 4 –  that she was running up to the convenience store. They never saw her again. Six days later, her body was found, partially buried in a nearby vacant lot. Her own daughter had walked by the site several times. “Me and my friends walked this same path every day,” Jenesis said. “And we kept saying ‘something stinks back there,’ not knowing it was my own mama.” Detectives say two things make this a hard case to crack. “Any time someone is killed, detectives look at a couple of things,” said Sgt. Rusty Hardeman with Mobile Police. “What was going on in the area at the time of the crime?” In Corbin’s case , six days passed between the time Bernadine was last seen and the time her body was discovered. “Ít’s really hard to pinpoint the time of death,” Hardeman said. The other major factor detectives look for, according to Hardeman, is who would have wanted to hurt the victim. Hardeman says Bernadine Corbin didn’t appear to have any enemies. “She wasn’t doing anything or leading a life that would make her more susceptible than other people,” he said. “She was so friendly, she was so nice,” said Jenesis. “Everybody loved her,” added Shanna. “She was a loving person.” Bernadine’s children say they’ll mark their mother’s birthday every year until the case is solved. The murder itself left deep wound. The unsolved nature of the case makes it worse. “It was hard,” said Shanna. “I had to actually grow up at a young age. I had to take care of my sister and my brother and I had to raise them. So, I never really had a childhood.” Hardeman says it’s likely whoever killed Bernadine told someone about it. After 16 years, it could take one of those confidants coming forward to solve the case.

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WKRG) — An arrest has been made in connection with an Amber Alert issued out of Walton County in October, according to deputies. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Paul Lewis Vaughan is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following an investigation into the incident on October 28th where he and 35-year-old Joseph Harding entered a home on Otter Pond Road. Multiple agencies responded to help aid in the search including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, as well as Holmes, Geneva, Jackson, and Bay County Sheriff’s Offices. According to WCSO, Rebecca and Gracie were located several hours later in Samson, Alabama unharmed. Vaughan was booked into the Walton County Jail on November 15th where he is held on $50,000 bond. MOBILE, AL (WKRG) — A burglar nicknamed the “Pink Panther Bandit” that’s going viral on social media appears to be stealing packages from homes in Mobile, Alabama. Except, she isn’t. News 5 has found out that despite the video being shared on Facebook by multiple residents in Mobile, the burglaries caught-on-camera are occurring in Chicago, Illinois. The video on Facebook states that the female suspect, with hot pink hair wearing nothing but socks on her feet, is stealing packages in the “Westlawn” area. Mobile has a similarly-named neighborhood near Spencer-Westlawn Elementary School. This is likely the reason for the confusion. The video has received more than 13,000 shares on Facebook, and many of those shares are coming from other states across the country. Carry on, Gulf Coast.

  • NFL investigates Jameis Winston for allegedly groping an Uber driver in 2016, report saysNFL investigates Jameis Winston for allegedly groping an Uber driver in 2016, report says

(WFLA)—The NFL is investigating allegations against Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston after he was accused of grabbing a female Uber driver’s crotch in 2016, BuzzFeed News reports.  Winston has since taken to social media to deny the accusations. The website obtained a letter to the Uber driver from the NFL’s special counsel for investigation, which reads: “The League has been informed that you may have been the victim of such a violation perpetrated by Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Jameis Winston. The league takes allegations of this nature very seriously and has opened an investigation into this matter.” The Uber driver, identified as Kate, told BuzzFeed she picked Winston up in downtown Scottsdale, Arizona around 2 a.m. She claims he was her only passenger. “I started driving, and right away, Jameis behaved poorly.”  Kate said Winston started shouting homophobic slurs at pedestrians, then asked her to stop for food. While they were waiting in line at a drive-thru, “he reached over and he just grabbed my crotch,” Kate said, and held his hand there for three to five seconds. “I wasn’t just creeped out, I was frozen,” said Kate, who described Winston as “very physically imposing.” “I mean he’s an NFL quarterback and I’m 5 ft 6. I’m not prepared for that. So I completely froze,” Kate said. News Channel 8 confirms Winston was “removed from the app” following the alleged incident. Winston responded to the allegations on Friday afternoon, saying he was falsely accused.  He released the following statement on Instagram: A news organization has published a story about me regarding an alleged incident involving a female Uber driver from approximately two years ago.  The story falsely accuses me of making inappropriate contact with this driver.  I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her.  The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matter, I am addressing this false report immediately.  At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account. I am supportive of the national movement to raise awareness and develop better responses to the concerns of parties who find themselves in these types of situations, but this accusation is false.  While I am certain that I did not make any inappropriate contact, I don’t want to engage in a battle with the driver and I regret if my demeanor or presence made her uncomfortable in any way. Earlier, Winston’s representative, Russ Spielman, denied the allegations in the following statement to BuzzFeed: “We categorically deny this allegation. It is our understanding the uber driver was unable to identify the specific individual who allegedly touched this driver inappropriately. The only reason his name is being dragged into this is that his Uber account was used to call the ride.” When asked about the NFL’s letter, he said, “I don’t have a comment on that, what you’re hearing is the first time I’m hearing about that.” The Tampa Bay Buccanneers released the following statement in response to the allegations: “We are in the process of obtaining further information regarding today’s media report.  We take these matters seriously and are fully supportive of the investigation that is being conducted by the NFL.” An Uber representative told the website, “That kind of rider behavior is absolutely not tolerated on the platform, I recommend contacting law enforcement as soon as possible.” Uber also said the driver would not be “matched with this rider going forward” and that, “While our privacy policy prevents me from disclosing the exact action taken, in the past riders with these kind of instances have not been welcomed back to the service.”
