  • Titans lose nail biter in San FranciscoTitans lose nail biter in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO. Ca. (WKRN) – Robbie Gould hit a 45 yard field goal as time expired and the Titans playoff hopes took a big hit with a 25-23 loss in San Francisco Sunday. Ryan Succop gave the Titans a 23-22 lead with 1:07 left in the game, but it was too much time for an offense the Titans defense struggled to slow down all day. The day started horribly for Tennessee as they fell behind 16-3 in the first half behind three Gould field goals and a five yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Garoppolo to Garrett Celek. Mistakes again cost the Titans early as Delanie Walker dropped a touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota and then fumbled setting up the 49ers final score of the half. Mariota put together a beautiful 79 yard drive to close out the half though and when he hit Walker for a four yard TD the Titans trailed only 16-10 at the half. The Titans opened the second half with a long drive and a 31 yard Ryan Succop field goal to make it a 16-13 game. In the fourth quarter the Titans took their first lead when Mariota hit Rishard Matthews for an 8 yard touchdown and a 20-13 lead. The 49ers responded with three straight field goals taking a 22-20 lead with just 3:08 left to play. Mariota drove the Titans for what looked like was going to be a game winning drive, but on a critical 3rd and 2 the Titans elected to run and DeMarco Murray was dropped for a yard loss.  Succop did hit the field goal, but with plenty of time left for the Niners to win the game. It’s a critical loss for the Titans dropping them to 8-6 with two games left to play against two of the hottest teams in football, the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Jags lead the AFC South by two games at 10-4.

A group of eight women participated in a special ceremony late last week inside the Tennessee Prison For Women in Nashville. It was their graduation — after most of them spent more than a decade working towards their Bachelor’s degrees from Lipscomb University. In many ways, this feels like any other Lipscomb graduation. Bright purple curtains with the university’s logo adorn a stage in a gym. Graduates in black caps and gowns chat excitedly, peering into the crowd in search of familiar faces.

Merely Torres-Garcia has been living in a hotel room in Hartford, Conn., with her husband and two kids after losing part of her house in Puerto Rico to Hurricane Maria. She said spending the Christmas season in the northeastern cold has been hard for her family. But on Saturday night, in the noisy atrium of Hartford City Hall, it felt a little bit like Christmas on the island. "My kids are happy. We feel like home in here right now," she said. Torres-Garcia was at a Christmas celebration called a parranda, where members of Hartford's Puerto Rican community greeted families displaced by the storm with a musical parade and a hot meal. A traditional Puerto Rican parranda features carolers traveling from one house to the next — sharing food, drinks and singing Christmas songs late into the night. Saturday's celebration happened inside to avoid the cold weather outdoors. But Torres-Garcia said the parranda made her proud to be Puerto Rican. "It's part of us, what we are," Torres-Garcia said

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) –  Longtime business reporter at the Tennessean and Tennessee State University professor Getahn Ward, 45, died Saturday at his Nashville home after brief illness. Ward had been a reporter for the Tennessean since 1998, and previously worked for the Nashville Banner. Getahn was an incredibly hard working, very enthusiastic and dedicated reporter,” said Brad Schmitt, Inside Nashville Columnist for the Tennessean. “He could often be heard shouting ‘Come on, man’ into his phone when he wasn’t getting what he wanted from a source.” Schmitt says he was relentless on the job, but had a very big heart. “Getahn drove a single mom’s child to school every day for her and was incredibly active in his church,” said Schmitt. Ward also taught journalism at TSU and enjoyed helping young reporters and interns. Details of memorial services were not announced.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – First out of the stocking a streaming video player. Amazon’s Fire Stick is a great way to watch movies and TV shows without cable or satellite. It plugs into a TV and offers a wide variety of movies and shows from Amazon Prime, Netflix and others. Control what you want to watch with an included remote, a smartphone app, or Alexa. Be aware though that after the first of the year, Google won’t allow YouTube to be played with a Fire Stick. One of the new Google Home minis will fit in here too. This is Google’s version of an Amazon Echo Dot. A personal assistant that plays music, answers questions and controls many smart home devices just by asking. This smartphone keyboard, the iClever, connects to any smartphone through Bluetooth. It’s about the size of a smartphone but folds out to a fairly decent sized keyboard to make typing out notes or emails easier. It has a trackpad and can connect to 3 devices at once. Most everyone runs out of space on their smartphone because of photos. The iXpand USB drive from SanDisk connects to a phone or tablets firewire port where you can download every photo from your phone. Save them on the iXpand and delete the photos on the phone to make room for more. The photos can be moved to a computer through an app. No one would expect a toothbrush in the stocking. The Kolibree Ara “smart” toothbrush monitors how well the kids are brushing. The device tracks how long they brushed, which teeth they missed, and has games to encourage them to brush longer and better. A stocking is the best place to hide the best gift because they won’t suspect it, and you don’t necessarily have to wrap it.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Volunteers with the Predators ladies and special spaces spent Saturday making dreams come true. “Painting, hanging wall paper, building furniture,” said Rhonda McCarthy who is with Special Spaces. Her task along with the other volunteers was to turn an office into a private beach style bedroom for Krystal Adams. “She has been moved down from her bedroom upstairs to the office so we wanted to make it just a real pretty place,” said McCarthy. Krystal is battling a rare brain tumor, but on this day, she says the only thing she had to battle was holding back tears of joy. “I was actually really surprised and I wanted to cry and my dad wanted to cry too,” said Krystal. “I told her when I gave her a hug I said don’t make me cry and I am glad I’m not,” said her father  James Adams. After walking into her new room it was clear that she loved every part of it. One of her favorite parts was a chandelier hanging from the ceiling, but she also liked the seashells and blue walls depicting the ocean. “I love, love, love, love, love the beach,” said Krystal. Krystal says she is thankful to all the volunteers who came out and made her day so special. “Thank you and I am so grateful for everything,” said Krystal. Not only did she get a new room, but her favorite Preds player, Pekka Rinne, gave her a signed hockey stick as well.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Moms can be hard to buy for and Truth be told, many moms aren’t comfortable learning how to use new technology. Not all moms of course but many moms tell me they have no interest in drones, robots or other high tech gadgets. but they might like these: If her car doesn’t have a phone connected speaker there a a few that connect to the phone and the radio. Jabra has a few that connect to the phone through Bluetooth so she can answer a call and carry on a conversation hands-free. The Jabra Freeway has an HD audio speaker so she can listen to music playing on her phone. These start at around 50-dollars. If she doesn’t already have an Amazon Alexa device she’ll likely love an Echo Dot. She can play music, get recipes, the news. These are only about $40 from Amazon. She’ll also want a Bluetooth speaker to go with it and The Vox is a great companion to the Dot. It sounds good and adds looks to the Dot. It runs on a battery so you can take the Dot anywhere without needing to plug it in. The Vaux is $50.The Amazon Surprise Sweets is a gift that keeps on giving. Get the Surprise Sweets Dash button. Whenever she presses the button, a box of sweets is shipped to her. The box of chocolates and other gourmet sweets arrive in a few days. She won’t know what she’s getting until it shows up on her doorstep. Each Sweet Treats box is charged to your account. They’re about $18 for each order. If mom lives out of town, take a look at the NixPlay digital photo frame. The cool thing about this is you can upload photos from wherever you are. Just snap the photo, open the app and upload. The picture will automatically on the frame. the nixplay frame starts at $80. If your mom says she doesn’t have time to spend learning how to use techie gifts make sure you point out that these gifts are easy to use and they’ll save time.

Copyright 2017 NPR. To see more, visit ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST: This evening, Republican lawmakers released the final version of tax legislation that's been making its way through Congress for the past several weeks. NPR congressional reporter Kelsey Snell has been sorting through the bill, which is more than 500 pages long, and she's with us now. Hiya. KELSEY SNELL, BYLINE: Hi. SIEGEL: Looking over where things have landed, how is this bill going to impact taxpayers? SNELL: Well, this is a lot to absorb, so let's kind of walk through some of the big themes. Everyone's taxes are a little bit different, but overall we know that first, if you're a married couple making over $600,000, you'll probably benefit because for the next eight years you're going to see your rates cut. Another group that'll likely benefit are families with many children. Those families will likely see a benefit because the child tax credit is expanding to $2,000, and more of that will be refundable. So if you're a

Ninety-two Somali immigrants, set to be deported from the US, found themselves shackled at the hands and feet and kept aboard a plane for two days earlier this month. That part of the story is not in dispute. The Somalis left Louisiana on Dec. 7. Their flight, chartered by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was bound for Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. But the plane never arrived. After landing in Dakar, Senegal, on Africa's west coast, the one-way flight became a round trip, back to the US. Why that happened, though, remains subject to dispute.  The 92 immigrants, now being held at the Krome and Glades detention facility outside Miami, are consulting with their lawyers. The passengers say they were denied food and water and weren't allowed to use the bathroom. “One of my colleagues characterized them as slave ship conditions,” says attorney Kimberly Hunter, who represents two of the passengers on the flight.  “ICE disputes accounts about lack of adequate food, water and

Related:   Firefighters race to get control of California wildfires But it’s not just people and infrastructure that are in danger — fires also threaten indigenous cultural sites. That’s where Gilbert Romero comes in. He’s a fire captain for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, but he’s also one of the department ’s “cultural specialists.” Romero grew up wanting to protect Chumash heritage and culture. His father has done a similar job for the tribe for decades, going to construction sites and working with archeologists to protect sacred sites as a monitor . “He still does it to this day — that's his love and his passion,” says Romero. “It’s one of mine as well.” But Romero says it can be difficult balancing his roles as a firefighter and a cultural specialist. “I know that we're not always going to

Twenty-first century businesses must see inclusive diversity as essential as any other business discipline — finance, marketing or communication — because it is just as important to the company’s success.
